07 Jun Menstrual Hygiene Kits (Days For Girls)
Kadasig is excited to announce our newest project and partnership. We are working with Days For Girls International (DFG) in bringing reusable sustainable menstrual hygiene kits to girls and women in Cebu. These kits help to reduce missed school and work days during monthly periods.
In October 2018, Fay and Amy visited the Philippines and the Kadasig Aid Centre in Cebu. While on this trip they were excited to distribute the first ever Days For Girls Kits to the Kadasig community. Many thanks to Bev and the North Balwyn Days For Girls Team for the donation of 50 kits, enabling us to get started.
In preparation Fay and Amy completed the Ambassador of Women’s Health Distribution Course 101 prior to the trip. Whilst there they gave three talks, each two hours in length to a total of 93 women. The talks were based on basic female anatomy, physiology of the menstrual cycle, menstrual hygiene, family planning, and importantly introduction of the Days for Girls Kit and it’s use and care. The kits were distributed to the women of menstruating age who attended the educational talks.
Through the Days For Girls database Fay and Amy have taken surveys of the women and girls and what their needs are and how the kits can help. There will be a follow up survey in 3 months regarding use of the kit.
The women were excited to receive the kits and felt they would make a big difference in their lives. Currently the major barriers to menstrual hygiene include cost/sanitary disposal/quality products and missing school and work due to menstruation.
Following our visit, Kadasig held sessions with the men of Kadasig, to meet and discuss Kadasig matters but also to discuss women’s and men’s health-including women’s hygiene, family planning and domestic violence.
We were pleasantly surprised by the extraordinarily enthusiastic response to the Days for Girls Kits. The women were proud, honoured and thrilled to receive them and left feeling valued and empowered.
Kadasig will be setting up a chapter in Melbourne for production of kits. To get started we are in need of your support. Donate just $20 to cover the cost of materials to put together one kit. One kit will supply one girl or women with 3 years of sustainable, reusable menstrual hygiene supplies.
